summer brushing and de-shedding tips

Summer sun and fun will be here soon, but the heat can take a toll on your furry friend’s coat. Brushing becomes even more critical to keep your pup cool, comfortable, and looking its best during these warm months. At Canine Couture Grooming, we know every dog is unique. That’s why we’ve put together some breed-specific summer brushing and de-shedding tips to help your pup maintain a healthy, shiny coat all summer!

Summer Brushing and De-Shedding Tips

Brushing Basics:

  • Frequency: Brushing frequency depends on your dog’s breed and coat type. Short-haired dogs might benefit from weekly brushing, while double-coated breeds may need brushing every other day during shedding seasons (like summer!).
  • The Right Brush:  Using the proper brush is key. We recommend consulting our expert groomers for a personalized recommendation, but here’s a general guide:
    • Slicker brushes: Great for all coat types, especially for removing loose fur and debris.
    • Undercoat rakes: Perfect for double-coated breeds to remove dead undercoats and prevent matting.
    • Deshedding tools: These tools come in various forms and can be a lifesaver during heavy shedding seasons.

Brushing by Breed:

  • Short-haired breeds (Labrador Retrievers, Beagles): A quick brush with a slicker brush a few times a week will remove loose hair and keep their coat sleek.
  • Long-haired breeds (Collies, Shih Tzus): We recommend daily brushing to prevent tangles and mats. Use a slicker brush to remove loose hair. Next, follow by a long-tooth comb to detangle.
  • Double-coated breeds (Huskies, German Shepherds):  These dogs are notorious shedders! Therefore, regular brushing with an undercoat rake is essential to remove dead hair and prevent matting. Follow up with a slicker brush to remove any remaining loose fur.

De-Shedding Techniques:

  • Brush in sections:  Brushing in sections helps ensure you reach all areas of your dog’s coat and remove as much loose hair as possible.
  • Brush in the direction of growth:  Brushing against the grain can irritate your dog’s skin. Always brush with the natural direction of fur growth.
  • End with a good cuddle: Brushing can be a bonding experience for you and your pup. To make it a positive experience, reward your dog with some playtime or a cuddle session after a good brush.
